Explore the World of Journalism – Taster Afternoon
Journalism plays a vital role in our democratic society—now’s your chance to experience it firsthand.
Join us for an interactive session where you’ll investigate social media, interview peers, plan articles, and create headlines. Explore our newsroom, see work from current students, and chat with staff about our journalism courses and career paths.
Discover where a journalism degree can take you, with graduates working at the BBC, Daily Express, Daily Mirror, and Sky Sports. Plus, gain valuable insights for your UCAS personal statement and portfolio.
At our Journalism & Media Tasters
your students will:
- Explore the world of journalism and its crucial role in our democratic society.
- Enjoy an interactive session – interrogate social media, interview your peers, plan an article and create your own headlines.
- Visit our newsroom, where you can look at some of the work that the current students have produced.
- Chat with our staff about the journalism courses and gain personal insights into what it’s like to work as a journalist.
- Learn about graduate destinations and the wide range of career opportunities available for Journalism graduates – our past students have gone into jobs with big names such as the BBC, Daily Express, Daily Mirror and Sky Sports.
- Gain useful ideas that you can channel into your UCAS personal statement and portfolio when applying to university, showing your passion for journalism.
- Chat with current students about life as a student at ºÚÁϳԹÏand the different creative courses that they study

Taster Afternoon Location
Check in opens at 12:15pm in Eldon Building, Southsea, ºÚÁϳԹÏPO1 2DJ. Look out for our students in purple T-shirts who'll help direct you.
If you're arriving by coach or minibus, we recommend parking on Museum Road, ºÚÁϳԹÏwhich is just outside of the Ravelin Sports Centre. For more information on checking in and how to get here, take a look at our guide to taster days page.
Programme
Check in from 12:15pm at Eldon Building, Southsea, Portsmouth, PO1 2DJ and get ready to learn about studying Journalism and Media at University.

Your students will explore how Journalism and Media degrees at ºÚÁϳԹÏcombine creative vision with technical skills, shaping the future of storytelling and media technologies.
Interrogate social media
A session exploring the world of social media, with some guidance on personal statements and portfolios. Expect a mix of discussion and activities to get you thinking.
It's a great time for your class to take a short break, reflect on what they've learned so far, and stretch before moving on to the next session.
The floor is open for you and your students to ask questions. You'll have the attention of lecturers and current students to pick their brains about different Journalism and Media courses, the transition from college to Uni and moving away from home - or whatever else they want to know about uni.
Newsroom Experience & Headline Writing
A visit to the newsroom where you’ll get a feel for the environment, followed by an introduction to headline writing.
Take a guided campus tour and explore the diverse facilities and spaces at Portsmouth.
