Funding your teacher training

Find out how much your tuition fees will cost, and the different ways you can fund your study with us

How much are tuition fees?

The amount your teaching training will cost varies, depending on what course you're studying, the subject you're focusing on, and where you're applying from. All fees are subject to annual increases, please refer to your relevant course page for next year's fees.

The good news is that if you're on a qualifying teacher training course in England, there are plenty of bursaries, loans and funding options open to you when it comes to paying for your studies.

Tuition fee and maintenance loans

If you’re studying any of our PGCE courses – and you’re not eligible to receive a bursary or scholarship – you're eligible for an undergraduate student loan to help cover your fees and living costs.

You won’t have to pay the cost of your tuition in advance (although you can, if you'd like to) and you'll only repay the loan when you're in employment and earning more than £25,000 a year.

Your personal circumstances can also affect your eligibility for further funding, and the UK government's  can help you work out if you can claim for Parents' Learning Allowances, Childcare Grants, Child Tax Credits and many other additional sources of funding.

Scholarships and bursaries

Secondary PGCE bursaries

PGCE trainees studying to become secondary teachers may be eligible for considerable financial support. If you train to teach at a secondary school in 2024/25, you may be able to get a bursary of up to £28,000 from the  on the following courses:

  • English
  • Geography
  • Mathematics
  • Modern Foreign Languages
  • Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Scholarships are offered by independent charitable institutions. They set their own eligibility criteria and you’ll need to apply through the relevant scholarship body. The following PGCE courses are eligible for scholarships: 

  • Chemistry
  • Languages (French, German or Spanish only)
  • Maths
  • Physics

Further Education and Skills bursaries (PGCE and CertEd)

If you study Further Education and Skills PGCE or CertEd in 2024/25, you may be able to receive a bursary or grant awarded by the Department for Education to support your study with us.

If you're not already working in teaching and you'll be studying the PGCE or CertEd full-time, you may be able to get a pre-service bursary. Pre-service bursaries, paid to you, are available in the following subjects:

  • Computing, engineering (and/or manufacturing), maths, and science (including biology, chemistry, or physics): £30,000
  • SEND: £15,000
  • English: £15,000
