Overview

Explore financial crime investigations and work with business legal teams on this forensic accounting Master’s. Prepare for your career as a forensic accountant, or in internal auditing or compliance, whether you’ve studied accounting in the past or not. 

Develop your knowledge and critical analysis skills as you investigate where things have gone wrong in business. 

You’ll study financial crime, law and fraud as you focus on business crime prevention and prepare for case discussions with lawyers. You'll apply your learning in topical case studies and develop your understanding of what to look for in financial accounts in industry.

To start, you'll explore topics including data modelling, accountancy basics and valuations. You’ll then discover forensic investigation and fraud examination, as well as corporate governance and ethics, and learn to be an expert witness in our replica courtroom.

By learning from experienced lecturers and industry guest speakers you’ll gain a better understanding of the industry as a whole, and have opportunities to network with guests and fellow accountancy students from across the department. 

You'll graduate ready for your forensic accounting or compliance career. To get the most out of this course you should be analytical and curious, and keen to specialise in forensic accounting.

Full-time

Core modules

Students are introduced to key concepts and issues in conceptualising, designing, conducting and communicating research in the general fields of accounting, economics and finance and their sub-fields like financial technology, digital economy etc., informed by best practices across the subject disciplines. The module provides opportunities for students to engage with the practical application of research techniques and the chance to discuss research issues and ideas in an incubator type environment. The teaching sessions enable students to reflect upon the empirical research ideas and concepts introduced throughout the study programme across all units and to discuss, with academic staff field specialists how this prior research may inform their own research project. The module will also provide the opportunity to gain competence in the navigation and use of platforms and secondary data sources such as Bloomberg, Capital IQ etc. and in acquiring independent study skills under guidance of an assigned supervisor.

The ultimate objective of this module is to introduce students to data concepts, ethics, analytics, governance, and management. The students will learn how to collect, clean, organise, and handle massive amounts of data and how to ensure the data security and reliability. The module will introduce students to the world of Big Data and the main theories in data science, which will help to cope with the modern employment requirements.

This module also covers the legal parameters governing the provision of expert evidence in different proceedings.

Exploring regulatory environments, you'll evaluate digital techniques to gather evidence from email reviews to blockchain analysis. Through case studies, you'll appreciate the wider organisational and behavioral issues that enable fraud, and consider preventative measures alongside sanctions. With the curiosity to probe new data sources and analytical rigour to convey clear messages, you'll be equipped to champion greater integrity and transparency.

Lectures will introduce principles and theory, providing and facilitating a basis for independent learning on the part of the student, contributing to the achievement of all Learning Outcomes. Seminars engage students in formative problem solving activities and discussions addressing all Learning Outcomes. The Hallmarks that the module seeks to address are: - Think independently, analytically and creatively, and engage imaginatively with new areas of investigation within and across discipline boundaries. - Be able to locate, access and critically engage with information, using current and emerging digital technologies. - Be able to communicate clearly and effectively, in a range of forms and to different audiences. - Be able to work in a range of environments, responding positively to new situations by being aware, flexible, adaptable and realistic in their expectations.

Seminars engage students in formative problem solving activities and discussions addressing all Learning Outcomes. Distance learning — full-time or part-time

Core modules

Ethical approval MUST be gained BEFORE any primary research is undertaken. The completed form, signed off by the supervisor, must be submitted within the project (perhaps as an appendix). ANY PROJECT SUBMITTED WITHOUT A SIGNED OFF ETHICS FORM WILL BE MARKED AS A FAIL (and, at the Unit Assessment Board, Referral, with a maximum mark of 40%, may be permitted depending on the student's overall profile, in accordance with University Assessment Regulations).

Data has been generated in all areas of business: finance, HR, marketing etc. Accountants at the heart of business should therefore have an ability to collect and organise data in the most efficient manner so that they can help executives to make informed decisions in a timely manner. The objective of this module is to help students to understand fundamental data management concepts such as database design, relational database structure, data governance and query a database using Structured Query Language (SQL). The module also introduces Big Data and basic methods to deal with Big Data.

This module also covers the legal parameters governing the provision of expert evidence in different proceedings. Students have the opportunity to join the lectures and seminars through the use of online meeting technology. This will be explained to you in your first session with your module coordinator

This module is supported by a Moodle site which enables students to download supporting materials and to communicate online with tutors and students.

How you'll spend your time

We recognise that you'll probably be juggling more demands when you do your Master's degree, as you may be working or you may have family responsibilities.

We'll give you as much indication here as we can of how much time you'll need to spend in on-campus or in online lectures and seminars and how many hours you can expect to spend in self-directed study, but please note that these indications are always subject to change.

Course structure

You will study the same modules on this course if you study full-time or part-time, and whether you study on campus or through distance learning. 

You can study this course: 

  • Full-time over 1 year, on campus or via distance learning
  • Part-time over 2 years by distance learning
  • Part-time over 30 months on campus or by distance learning, or by distance learning starting in January 

If you choose to study on campus you should plan to attend campus every weekday.  

If you choose to study by distance learning, your classes will be pre-recorded and available online so you can study in your own time.

Teaching

Master's study is deeper and more specialised than an undergraduate degree. This means you'll focus on something that really matters to you and your career as you work closely with academics committed to the subject.

You'll spend more time in independent study and research than you did for your undergraduate degree. If you choose campus based study, the majority of your teaching time will be in-person and face-to-face.

I qualified as a chartered accountant with PKF (now BDO), where I specialised in auditing across a variety of business sectors. I then spent 8 years working as a forensic accountant for Deloitte in London. I joined the University in 2015.

I'm particularly interested in forensic accounting and fraud in sport and I've done a lot of research on the finances of football. I created a football finance course for the Premier League's Elite Academy Managers programme (EAM) and I'm Director of Policy at 'Fair Game'.

Professor Lisa Jack

Professor Lisa Jack

I am one of the few accounting researchers to investigate the agri-food industry. I write about the effects of accounting and performance measurement practices on the industry, and on society more widely. In particular, I investigate fraud in the food and drink industry. I have also led a successful project, on the growing costs and other problems associated with retail returns in from online purchases. This work has brought me into contact with major retailers in Europe and is continuing with new projects around costing, lean management and circular economy in omnichannel environments.

The Master's academic year runs from September to the following September. There are breaks at Christmas and Easter. Over the summer you'll be writing your project / dissertation.

January start

Courses that start in January have the same amount of teaching as September-start courses, but they normally run over a longer time period.

Antonette: There were no universities in India that offered me this course, this niche specialisation. 

As a kid, I've always wanted to study in the UK. I've heard a lot about quality of education in the country, and I chose ºÚÁϳԹÏbecause ºÚÁϳԹÏwas one of the only four, at that point, that were offering this course and it was one of the top. 

Honestly, everything was different. It was a total culture change for me, you know, with the food, with, you know, how you get along with people. The concept of using please, sorry, thank you in every sentence. But I would say it wasn't difficult. The people in ºÚÁϳԹÏare really nice and the whole city felt very welcoming. I used to love taking my books to the seafront and sitting down there just, you know, with my mug of hot chocolate and just sitting there and studying. So overall, I really liked how the course was structured. I think every module that was covered is very much relevant to what I'm doing right now. The concept of having personal tutors I think is very crucial for an international student because for people that are not used to this mode of education, to have someone to sort of literally hold your hand and walk you through it is very crucial. 

I think the best part of it was actually the module on expert witnessing where we actually got to go to the Crown Court. We have one part of our coursework that was conducted there where you're cross-examined, which I think was very exciting. My degree got me an internship with Moore Stephens. I moved to India, and I started working with Ernst & Young in their forensic team as a consultant and that experience, along with my degree, took me to KPMG and here I am. I am with KPMG in the UK now. 

I just love my job. I love what I'm doing. I investigate on a daily basis. I currently work around anti-bribery, anti-corruption, and I just think overall, the course was just my foundation taking me heights. I'm sure it's going to take me higher.

As well as regular scheduled meetings with your personal tutor, they're also available at set times during the week if you want to chat with them about anything that can't wait until your next meeting.

You'll have help from a team of study support tutors. Based within the Faculty of Business and Law, these tutors are familiar with the specific requirements your assignments and work closely with faculty academics. If you're a mature student, specialist support to help you return to learning is available.

During term time, Faculty Academic Skills Tutors (AST) are available for bookable 1-to-1 sessions, small group sessions and online sessions. These sessions are tailored to your needs.

Support is available for skills including:

  • University study
  • Getting into the right study mindset
  • Note-taking and note-making skills
  • Referencing
  • Presentation skills
  • Time management, planning, and goal setting
  • Critical thinking
  • Avoiding plagiarism

If you have a disability or need extra support, the Additional Support and Disability Centre (ASDAC) will give you help, support and advice.

Library staff are available in person or by email, phone, or online chat to help you make the most of the University’s library resources. You can also request one-to-one appointments and get support from a librarian who specialises in your subject area.

The library is open 24 hours a day, every day, in term time.

Our online  will help you plan for managing the challenges of learning and student life, so you can fulfil your potential and have a great student experience.

You can get personal, emotional and mental health support from our Student Wellbeing Service, in person and online. This includes 1–2–1 support as well as courses and workshops that help you better manage stress, anxiety or depression.

If you require extra support because of a disability or additional learning need our specialist team can help you.

They'll help you to

  • discuss and agree on reasonable adjustments
  • liaise with other University services and facilities, such as the library
  • access specialist study skills and strategies tutors, and assistive technology tutors, on a 1-to-1 basis or in groups
  • liaise with external services

If English isn't your first language, you can do one of our English language courses to improve your written and spoken English language skills before starting your degree. Once you're here, you can take part in our free In-Sessional English (ISE) programme to improve your English further.

How to apply

Unlike undergraduate applications, which go through UCAS, applications for this Master's course are made directly to us.

There's no deadline for applications to this course. We accept applications right up until the start dates in September and January, as long as there are places available. If you wait until your start month to apply, you may find that the course is full. 

If you're applying to study on-campus as an international student, remember that you'll need to leave plenty of time to get your visa organised.

If you're an international student, you can apply directly to us using the same application form as UK students.

Once we receive your application, we may ask you for further information. We will then either make you an offer or suggest alternatives if your application is unsuccessful.

You'll usually get a decision within 10 working days, so you shouldn't have to wait too long. Some courses have an interview stage – we'll let you know if you need to prepare for one.
