Leaders from across the plastic packaging supply chain met today (26 March) to celebrate the innovation and impact of the more than 80 projects, funded over the past five years. They were bought together at the UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) celebration event in London, delivered by Innovate UK.

From cutting-edge recycling technologies, to novel bio-derived packaging materials and major advances in reuse and refill systems, these projects exemplify the power of innovation in shaping a more circular and sustainable future for plastic packaging. The event highlighted the transformative role of these initiatives and explored how they can contribute to the ongoing development of a cleaner, more sustainable plastics industry.

It’s great to be here today celebrating the innovation and impact of these projects, which all signal positive change in the UK plastics packaging supply chain. The Global Plastics Treaty is likely to be a big game changer in how the world processes plastic waste, and these initiatives will put the UK in a strong position to start the transition to a more sustainable plastics supply chain.

Since its inception, the SSPP Challenge has not only supported ground breaking research and development but has also demonstrated strong industry backing, leveraging over £270 million in additional investment. This event served as an opportunity to celebrate these collective achievements, showcasing the progress of SSPP-funded projects, and fostering discussions on how continued innovation can drive sustainability and clean growth in the future.
