February is LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) History Month here in the UK.
LGBT+ History Month highlights and celebrates the myriad of accomplishments of LGBT+ people over time, so often overlooked by the history books.
Founded by educational charity Schools OUT in 2005, LGBT+ History Month shines a light on the many ways LGBT+ people have contributed to society across all areas of life.
It also aims to raise awareness of the progress that still needs to be made to fight discrimination and achieve true equality for LGBT+ people.
What is the theme for LGBT+ History Month 2025?
The theme for LGBT+ History Month 2025 is ‘’. Countless people in the LGBT+ community have been activists and taken pivotal roles in working for positive change throughout history, achieving affirmative action for all people.
From protests and campaigns, to educational initiatives and creating art, activism and working for social change for the LGBT+ community has taken an array of forms, and still continues to today.
Why is LGBT+ History Month in February?
It’s no accident that February is the month that marks LGBT+ History Month in the UK.
In February 2003, Section 28 - a law that prevented the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality - was abolished in this country. Section 28 banned any mention of same-sex relationships in public life, even down to prohibiting teachers from teaching about homosexuality in schools.
The founders of LGBT+ History Month chose February to commemorate this vital step forward, and to symbolise the start of a process of recovery from the damage done by this homophobic legislation.
